Understanding Zakat

What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a mandatory charitable contribution for those who meet the necessary criteria of wealth. It purifies your earnings and helps those in need. It is calculated as 2.5% of your qualifying wealth held for one lunar year.

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth a Muslim must possess before they are liable for Zakat. There are two standards:

  • Gold Standard: 87.48 grams (3 ounces) of gold.
  • Silver Standard: 612.36 grams (21 ounces) of silver.

The Silver standard is often recommended as it benefits more recipients, but Gold is common for personal savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I pay Zakat?

You become liable for Zakat once your wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold and maintains that status for one full lunar year (Hawl). Many people choose to pay during Ramadan for greater rewards.

Is the family home Zakatable?

No, your primary residence, personal vehicle, clothing, and furniture are exempt from Zakat.

How is the result calculated?

This tool follows standard Islamic financial rulings for Zakat calculation:

  • Threshold: Checks if your net assets exceed the Nisab of 87.48g (Gold) or 612.36g (Silver).
  • Rate: Applies the mandatory 2.5% rate on the surplus wealth.
  • Units: Uses the conversion 1 Tola = 11.664 Grams were applicable.
